Decimal vs. binary — which is which?

Decimal (SI) units step by 1000: 1 KB = 1000 B, 1 MB = 1000 KB. Used by storage vendors, network speeds and macOS/Linux disk sizes.

Binary (IEC) units step by 1024: 1 KiB = 1024 B, 1 MiB = 1024 KiB. Used for RAM and by Windows (which labels binary sizes as "KB/MB/GB").

The gap grows with scale: 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 B, about 7.4% larger than 1 GB (1,000,000,000 B).
